Wired reports that three libre NoSQL databases were the fastest growing databases in the industry in 2014. Specifically: MongoDB, Redis, and ElasticSearch.
This should not be any huge surprise. MongoDB is an incredibly versatile and useful document store. Redis is probably the best thing out there for website caching and storing data that frequently changes. The ElasticSearch team is on an incredible roll putting out new features to their products, which they are promoting quite successfully.
Of course, it notes that the likes of Oracle and MS SQL Server still dominate the industry. Although free/libre DBs are technically capable of handling most of the use cases of these DBs, the incredible amount of tooling and instrumentation and the world class (and top dollar) enterprise support will be difficult to compete with for some time.
Still, free software is alive and well in this field and will continue to win.Share on Twitter Share on Facebook
